TRAVEL

As a conservation organization, the CLM Program strives to reduce our carbon footprint in all ways possible. Keeping this in mind, we *strongly* encourage all interns who will be within a day's drive (or longer if you'd like to make a roadtrip), to consider driving and carpooling to the Grand Canyon, to the extent that this is possible, instead of flying to Phoenix.

Driving/Carpooling

1. Consult the list of interns emailed to you to determine if there might be other interns in cities/towns/field offices along the way to the Grand Canyon. Contact the intern(s) to see if they might be interested in carpooling with you.

2. Go to Google Maps to determine how long your trip will be (miles, time). If your trip requires an overnight stay, we will reimburse your hotel expense, in addition to your mileage.

3. Log in to acounts and let us know your driving plans and who will be traveling with you.

4. See the Lodging Information to learn about check in times.

5. Entering the Grand Canyon National Park: at the park entrance gate, inform the attendant that you are here to attend training at the Albright Training Center. You should not be charged a fee.

Driving/Carpooling Reimbursement

1. Fill out a Travel Voucher. We will have extras for you to fill out upon arrival. Be certain to provide an address for your check to be sent to - this check will not be directly deposited into your bank account.

2. If you are driving your personal vehicle, you will be reimbursed for the number of miles driven. Print off and attach the Google Maps driving directions for your trip to the Travel Voucher.

3. If you are driving a federal vehicle, you will be reimbursed for gas - save and turn in all receipts. Fill out theTravel Voucher listing all travel receipts.

4. If your trip required an overnight stay, include your hotel/motel/camping receipts.

5. You will be reimbursed for meals during your travel – please be sure to request itemized receipts for these expenses! You may not be reimbursed if your receipts are not itemized!!

6. All return-trip expenses will be submitted after you have returned home, following the same Travel Voucher procedure outlined here.

Flying

1. You MUST arrive at Sky Harbor Airport, Phoenix NO LATER than 3pm on Sunday, June 27th. We will be picking you up at the airport and driving you to the Grand Canyon. In order to arrive at the Grand Canyon in time to check in to your room, we MUST depart from Phoenix on time.

If you are unable to find a flight that will get you to the Phoenix airport by 3pm on Sunday, June 27th, you should make your ticket for Saturday, June 26th. We will arrange hotel reservations near the airport for you for Saturday night and will pick you up on Sunday for the trip to the Grand Canyon.

2. Your return flight should be arranged for Saturday, July 3rd or Sunday July 4th. We will depart for Phoenix at 8:00am sharp on Saturday, July 3rd. The earliest time you should book a departure flight is 3:00 on Saturday, July 3rd. If you are unable to find a flight on July 3rd, you should make your ticket for Sunday, July 4th. We will arrange hotel reservations near the airport for you for Saturday July 3rd for those departing on July 4th.

3. Log in to acounts and let us know your travel plans.

Flying Reimbursement

1. Fill out a Travel Voucher, being certain to provide an address for your check to be sent to - this check will not be directly deposited into your bank account.

2. You will need to provide a copy of your airfare receipt (email, webpage printout, etc.) with the amount that you paid and your name somewhere on the receipt.

3. Fax the Travel Voucher and Receipt to Marian Hofherr at 847-835-5484. Email mhofherr@chicagobotanic.org or call Marian (847-835-6873) to let her know that the fax has been sent so she knows to look for it. Marian will email you to confirm that the fax has been received.

4. If your trip required an overnight stay, include your hotel receipts.

FIELDWORK CLOTHING AND DRESS CODE

Please dress for fieldwork on TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY – field pants (not shorts), teeshirt/long sleeved shirt (no tank tops) to avoid sun exposure, and bring sunblock and a water bottle.

You will primarily be indoors on MONDAY and FRIDAY, dress according to the following dress code.

The Albright Training Center has a dress code: students are expected to dress in the classroom as they would in most government offices. We want you to be comfortable, but also represent the professional image of the federal government. It is not uncommon to have dignitaries, elected officials, and representatives form other government agencies observe and attend classes at the Albright training Center and your appearance contributes to their impressions. If a reporter or member of Congress were to suddenly show up at the training center (and it happens), we want to be confident that the image we are projecting demonstrates the best of the National Park Service.

Please keep the following in mind:
- No hats are to be worn in the classroom.
- No shorts or sunglasses in the classroom.
- No tank tops in the classroom or in the field.

CELL PHONES

Please note there is limited cell phone coverage at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. You may want to check with your cell phone provider to see if you have coverage if you plan on using your phone while here.

CONTACT INFORMATION

The main telephone number for the Albright Training Center is 928-638-7981. Telephone messages can be left for students at this number Monday thru Friday, 7:00am – 5:00pm.

Emergency messages can be delivered to students outside of business hours by contacting the Grand Canyon National Park dispatch office at 928-638-7805. While at the Grand Canyon, emergency response can be activated by dialing 911.
